Garnatz Celebrates Senior Day With 185-Foot Throw

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Track and Field programs honored their seniors before the meet, and senior Chris Garnatz uncorked a javelin throw of 185 feet, one inch (throw pictured) to finish in first at a SCIAC Quad Meet at Strehle Track on Saturday, with CMS, Whittier and La Verne also competing.

The Sagehens defeated Whittier and lost to CMS in scored competition (La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer did not score against each other).

The throw for Garnatz was the best in the SCIAC so far this year (second place is 177-7) and ranks him No. 13 in all of Division III. Teammate Calvin Aylward was second at Saturday's Quad Meet with a throw of 172 feet.

Sophomore Paul Messana ran the 800 for the first time this season after earning All-America honors in the event last season, and finished in first place, coming from behind to win by .27 in 1:53.39. Junior Bennett Kopperud also won the 400-meter hurdles in 55.81, an event in which he finished in first last year at the SCIAC Championships.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action next weekend when it hosts its annual invitational at Strehle Track, beginning at 10 a.m.
