Fowler Ninth In 5000 At NCAA Championships

Canton, N.Y. - Junior John Fowler (pictured, center) finished in ninth place (out of 20) in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Division III Men's Track and Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at St. Lawrence University.

Fowler finished the race in 14:41.33, which left him just one place shy of All-America honors, which go to the top eight. However, eighth place (Bijan Mazaheri of Williams) finished in 14:31.55, almost 10 seconds ahead, while Fowler edged out Darin Lau of Wisconsin Eau Claire by less than a second in a tight battle for ninth.

First place went to Josh Thorson of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 14:10.29, breaking a 12-year old track record at St. Lawrence and finishing five seconds ahead of second place Aldis Inde of Williams and six ahead of third place Andrew Padgett of Washington University.

Fowler also finished third in the NCAA West Regionals in cross country season and 41st at nationals, which was six spots shy of the cutoff for All-America honors, while leading the Sagehens to their highest finish as a team (17th) since 1982. He will be back next season looking to earn All-America honors in both the fall and the spring after near misses this year.
