Track and Field: Sagehens Fall To Occidental In Opening Dual Meet

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's and Women's Track and Field teams combined for a 141-133 loss against Occidental in their season-opening dual meet on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Rock Track. 

The Sagehen women tied with Occidental 66-66, while the Occidental men earned a narrow 75-62 victory. Pomona-Pitzer is now 3-3 against Occidental in the annual dual meet.

On the women's side, junior Abby Gardner took first place in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:02.51.

The Sagehens won the first relay of the day as the team of junior Schuyler Fox, junior Cat Banobi, freshman Gianna Wu and senior Ailene Nguyen took first place in the 4x100 meter relay clocking in at 50.24.

The women's team also took first in the distance medley as junior Maya Weigel, freshmanMicaiah Palmer, freshman Corinna Lee and Gardner ran a time of 12:46.92.

Nguyen took first place in both the long jump at 5.23 meters and the triple jump at 10.73 meters and sophomore Jessica Finn finished things off for the women taking first in the javelin throw with a toss of 39.21 meters.

On the men's side, the Sagehens won their first event of the day In the 3,000 meter run with senior John Fowler getting the win with a time of 8:42.05.

The Sagehens took first in both hurdles competitions with freshman Marcus Polk taking first in the 110 meter hurdles at 15.04 and also won the 300 meter hurdles clocking in at 39.15.

Pomona-Pitzer then won the 4x1600 meter relay as the team of senior Corey Purcella, senior Steven Ory, senior Andrew Segraves and Fowler finished with a time of 18:05.22.

The Sagehens went on to take first in the distance medley with junior Paul Messana, Segraves, sophomore Elliot Gabriel  and freshman Peter Davis coming in at 10:27.35.

Freshman Cal Neikirk tied for first place in the high jump as he and Occidental's Max Meade both jumped 1.90 meters. The Sagehens would go on to take first in long jump as junior Isaac Solomon leaped 6.15 meters.

Sophomore Brandon Hull went on to win the last two events on the men's side as he tied for first place in the pole vault competition at 3.95 meters and won the javelin throw at 48.00 meters.

Pomona-Pitzer won the only mixed relay of the meet in the 1600 sprint medley as the team of Banobi, sophomore Faraaz Rashidi, Nguyen, and freshman Eric Gofen finished with a time of 4:02.43.

Pomona-Pitzer will next hold the Collegiate All Comers meet held at Strehle Track on Saturday, February 20th starting at 10:30 a.m.
