INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The Pomona-Pitzer Track and Field programs will send six athletes to the 2017 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships on May 25-27 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio hosted by the University of Mount Union.
Maya Weigel will enter the 5000 meter with the fastest time (16:28.94) in NCAA Division III this season. The senior was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Year after winning the 1500 meter at the SCIAC Championships and setting a conference record in the process. Weigel earned All-American honors in both the 1500 meter and 5000 meter last season.
Jessica Finn will compete in the javelin for the Sagehens. The junior took second at the SCIAC Championships and will enter the meet with the tenth best mark in the country (141'3"). The Pomona-Ptizer women's team is currently ranked No. 23 in the nation.
On the men's side, Calvin Aylward will look for back-to-back All-American finishes in the javelin. The Pomona-Pitzer record holder (211'9") finished fourth last year in the event and steps into the competition this season ranked sixth nationally.
In the running events, SCIAC Champions Andy Reischling and Danny Rosen will look to cap of their seasons with top marks. Reischling scored a dominant win in the 5000 meter at the SCIAC Championships and has the second fastest time in program history in the event (14:15.70).
Rosen has had a stellar debut season for the Sagehens. The freshman was named SCIAC Newcomer of the Year after he won the 3000 meter steeplechase, leading Pomona-Pitzer to a sweep in the event.
Paul Messana closes out the national qualifier list for the Sagehens. The senior enters the 800 meter with the twelfth best time in Division III after taking second at the SCIAC Championships.
The top eight finishers in each event earn All-American honors. The top 20 male and top 22 female times/marks in each event along top 16 relay teams in the nation have qualified for the meet.
