Sagehens Dominate Second Half To Win SCIAC Opener

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team outscored Occidental 8-2 in the second half to pull away for a 15-8 win in its SCIAC opener on Saturday.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-13 on the year and 1-0 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer has also won four of its last five since starting out 1-12 with all 13 matches coming against teams ranked in the top 15 in the country.

Sophomore Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif. - pictured) scored a season-high three goals to lead the way for the Sagehens on the day, while leading scorer Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) continued his strong season with four goals, giving him a team-high 35 on the year.

Occidental jumped out to a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, and had a 6-4 lead midway through the second, but Pomona-Pitzer scored three straight goals to take a narrow 7-6 lead at intermission to start a 10-0 run.

The second half saw the Sagehens methodically build their lead and pull away for the convincing win, as they outscored the Tigers 3-0 in the third quarter to take a 10-6 lead, then scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to end any comeback hopes, going ahead 14-6 before Occidental was able to end the 10-0 run with two late goals.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday night, when it crosses Sixth Street for a key SCIAC road match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:30 p.m.
