Sagehens Capture Nailbiter over Redlands 11-10

Claremont, Calif. – Freshman Clayton Hardman (Old Greenwich, Conn. - pictured) broke a 9-9 tie with a rebound goal with 2:14 to play as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team earned an 11-10 win over Redlands on Wednesday evening at Haldeman Pool.

Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-17 overall and 5-1 in the SCIAC, maintaining a tie for first place. Redlands slips to 13-15 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC.

The Sagehens led 9-8 after three quarters, but Clint Freeman tied the score with 3:49 to play. Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.) hit the crossbar on a man-up chance, and on the next possession for the Sagehens, Travis Larsen (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) had his shot from in close saved by Tyler Abbott.

The long rebound came out onto the left side, though, where Hardman was able to beat the Redlands defense to it and score from five yards out to break the tie. After a Redlands turnover, junior Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) got loose for a breakaway and converted to stretch the lead to 11-9 with 1:42 to play.

Blake Van Hartesvelt, though, was able to pull the Bulldogs within 11-10 with 47 seconds left with time for one last possession. However, Redlands was called for an ejection with just under 30 seconds remaining, resetting the shot clock and enabling the Sagehens to kill off the remaining time up a man.

The game started as if it wouldn't come down to the wire at all as Jarrod Gaut (Irvine, Calif.) scored three goals in the first half to stake the Sagehens to a 5-1 lead. After Redlands opened the scoring, the Sagehens scored the next five goals, as Gaut scored two 48 seconds apart at the end of the first quarter to key the run and put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 4-1 after the first stanza. The second quarter saw the two teams trade goals, as Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) scored to put the Sagehens ahead 7-3, but Van Hartesvelt answered for the Bulldogs with his second goal of the game to make the score 7-4 at intermission.

Redlands stormed back quickly in the third quarter and pulled even at 8-8 on a goal with 2:02 left in the quarter from David Sekula. Stephen Vint scored for the Sagehens with 15 seconds left (just after a man-up advantage expired) to give Pomona-Pitzer a 9-8 lead after three.

Pokorny finished with seven saves and Tyler Abbott had six for the Bulldogs. Cox and Gaut had three goals apiece for the Sagehens, while Van Hartesvelt led all scorers with four.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it concludes the regular season with a pair of home matches on Saturday – its SCIAC finale against Cal Lutheran at 11 a.m. and a non-conference game with Air Force at 5 p.m. It will also be the final home match for the program's two seniors – goalkeeper Kyle Pokorny (Coronado, Calif.) and attacker Jaron Moler (Carmichael, Calif.).
