Chapman Pulls Away In Second Half To Defeat Sagehens 11-6

Orange, Calif. - The Chapman Men's Water Polo team outscored Pomona-Pitzer 4-0 in the third quarter to open up a big lead and captured an 11-6 win on Saturday afternoon in a SCIAC match.

The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 5-13 on the season and 1-1 in the SCIAC, after opening league play with a win over Occidental last weekend.

Pomona-Pitzer had six different goal scorers on the day, while Chapman had three players with three goals apiece.  Dor Appfel had all three Panther goals in the first quarter to stake his team to a 3-2 lead while Jeff O'Brien and Mark Alvarado each had three as well.

Alvarado had two of his goals in the 4-0 run in the third that turned a 4-3 halftime lead into an 8-3 advantage.  Senior Travis Larsen stopped the run in the fourth quarter to make it 8-4, and sophomore Timmy Hardman added a goal to make it 9-5 with 3:32 left, but the Sagehens were unable to mount a comeback.

Senior Kyle Van der Linde (pictured), sophomore James Baker, and freshmen Mark Hallman and Bennett Royce added goals for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens are back in action on Wednesday when they host defending SCIAC Champion Whittier at 7 p.m.
