CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team opens up the NCAA Tournament with No. 5 Long Beach State on Saturday night at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center at 7:00 p.m.
The Sagehens are 24-8 overall and ran the gauntlet with a perfect 15-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) this season. The Sagehens have built a dynasty over the past few season as Head Coach Alex Rodriguez completed a three-peat with three consecutive regular season SCIAC Championships and three-straight SCIAC Tournament Championships.
The Sagehens are led by SCIAC Player of the Year senior Adam Ward who netted 60 goals this season with six points. Freshman Sam Sasaki will look to continue his sensational freshman season as he currently sits three points away from 100 at 97 with 52 goals and 45 assists.
Long Beach ran through the Golden Coast Conference Tournament with wins over Pepperdine and Pacific. Long Beach is 13-11 overall and 3-2 in the GCC.
Long Beach State is led by junior Austin Stewart who topped 50 goals on the season, which placed him on the all-time record books for the Beach. Stewart carried the load last game against Pacific with his four-goal performance. In addition to Stewart's sharp shooting, he is also carrying a 10-game streak of scoring a goal in a game. The last time the junior wasn't able to net a goal came back on Oct. 13 against USC.
