LOS ANGELES, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team fell to No. 2 UCLA 12-2 in the opening round of the SoCal Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 5-3 overall.
The Sagehens were led by senior Tony Murphy and senior Dyland Elliott who each netted a goal in the loss. Senior James Kelbert got the start in goal and split time with junior Kellan Grant. Kelbert ended up with the loss and saved four shots while Grant finished the second half with three saves.
The Bruins got out to a quick start in the first period as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Murphy netted a goal for the Sagehens to cut the lead down to 3-1 heading into the second period.
UCLA scored back-to-back goals to start the second before Elliott got on the board for the Sagehens off of an assist from first-year Alexander Peterson but the Bruins closed out the half with two more goals to take a 7-2 lead at halftime.
The Bruins broke the game open in the third period as they outscored the Sagehens 4-0 and pushed their lead to 11-2. The Sagehens held the Bruins to just one goal in the fourth period but failed to get on the board in the second half as the Sagehens dropped their opening game to UCLA.
