Men's XC: Sagehens; Widlansky Claim NCAA West Region Title

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens earned the 2019 West Regional Championship on their home course on Saturday morning behind the West Regional Individual Champion Ethan Widlansky who ended with a top time of 25.00.07. This title marks the third-straight West Region Title for the Sagehens.

"Ethan Widlansky has been so strong all season long and proved his fitness once again with a strong close to secure his first individual collegiate victory," said Head Coach Jordan Carpenter. "It has been so fun to see the development of Ethan and this entire team over the course of the season. After graduating Andy last year there were a number of question marks for our squad coming into the season. This group has really stepped up and exceeded many of the expectations that I had for the team this year. We will look to keep the ball rolling next weekend in Louisville where we hope to improve on our 7th place finish from a year ago."

After a second place finish in the SCIAC, the Sagehens came back with a vengeance and topped CMS for the title of best team in the west.  The Sagehens finished with runners at number one, six, eight, tied for 10, 16 and 19.  Pomona-Pitzer ended with the best score at 33, followed by CMS at 43, UC Santa Cruz at 102, Occidental in fourth at132 and rounding out the top-five was Colorado College with 172.

Widlansky led the way with his championship time of 25.00.07. Behind him was Owen Keiser in sixth at 25:25.50, Hugo Ward in eighth at 25:31.20 and a tie for 10th with Ethan Ashby and Dante Paszkeicz sharing a time of 25:41.40.

Daniel Rosen ended in 16th with a time of 25:53.10 and Joseph Hesse-Withbroe ended the day for the Sagehens in 19th at 26:08.90.

"The goal today was to run controlled and put ourselves in a position to close well over the final mile of the race," said Carpenter. "I thought we executed well as a group and we were rewarded with our third straight West Region team title. Ethan Widlansky and Hugo Ward had tremendous days anchored by strong performances from the rest of our group as well."

Up Next: The Sagehens will next run at the NCAA Championship on November 23rd in Louisville, KY at 7:45 AM.
