Claremont, Calif. - Junior Carolyn Cross (Silverdale, Wash.) and sophomore Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif.) each threw complete games as the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team opened the 2012 season with a doubleheader sweep of La Sierra, winning the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 8-2.

Cross threw a three-hitter and Hynes a two-hitter, although the Sagehens had to come from behind in both games. La Sierra went ahead 1-0 in the third inning of the opener and 2-0 in the first inning of the nightcap before Pomona-Pitzer took the lead for good in the fourth inning of both contests.

In the opener, the Sagehens scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning to take the win. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch, freshman left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) beat out a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Freshman center fielder Leah Bleichner (Simi Valley, Calif.) then followed with a two-run single to give the Sagehens the lead for good at 2-1.

Two outs later, senior shortstop Ari Roach (Pinole, Calif.) doubled into the left-center field gap to make the score 3-1, and senior first baseman Bri Marcantoni (Chino Hills, Calif.) added an RBI double down the left field line to stretch the lead to 4-1.

Cross closed the door from there, as she allowed only three hits and struck out seven, while walking none, to get the win. Marcantoni was 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Morello was 2-for-3 with a double for Pomona-Pitzer.

In the nightcap, La Sierra jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Sagehens scored three times in the fourth with the help of three Golden Eagles errors, then broke the game open with a five-run fifth.

Roach started the fourth-inning rally with a line drive double that tipped off the glove of leaping Melissa Ortiz in left field.  She came home when Marcantoni's fly ball was mishandled for an error, and sophomore right fielder Shannon Julius (Coronado, Calif.) followed with an RBI single to tie the score at 2-2.

With the bases loaded, Morello hit a grounder to second, and the Golden Eagles attempted to come home for the forceout, but the throw was dropped at the plate to allow a third run to score.

The Pomona-Pitzer bats then exploded for five runs in the fifth. Hynes started off with a single through the left side, and after back-to-back walks loaded the bases, catcher Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.) followed with a two-run double to left-center, and freshman second baseman Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif.) followed with a single down the left-field line to score two more runs. Morello added a sacrifice fly to finish off the scoring.

Hynes allowed two hits and struck out three, while batting 2-for-4 at the plate. Julius was 2-for-2 with an RBI after coming off the bench, while freshman third baseman Jessica Liu (Alamo, Calif.) was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Pomona-Pitzer will return to action next Saturday when it travels to Vanguard for a doubleheader before its next home game on Friday, Feb. 10 against Pacific (Ore.).
