Costa Mesa, Calif. – The Vanguard Softball team jumped out to a big lead in the nightcap of a doubleheader and held off a Pomona-Pitzer comeback as it completed a sweep with an 11-5 win.
Vanguard, which improves to 6-0 on the year, also won the opening game 3-1. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 2-2 on the year with the losses.
Pomona-Pitzer fell behind 9-0 after the first inning in the nightcap. The Sagehens rallied and bounced back to close within 9-5 in the fifth, but could come no closer, as Vanguard added two more insurance runs in the sixth to seal the win.
Freshman catcher/third baseman Emily Glass (pictured) was 4-for-4 in the nightcap for Pomona-Pitzer, after hitting 2-for-3 in the opener, giving her an impressive 6-for-7 afternoon at the plate. Freshman center fielder Leah Bleichner added three runs scored in the second game (and four in the doubleheader).
In the opener, senior first baseman Bri Marcantoni staked the Sagehens to a 1-0 lead in the first, but Vanguard was able to rally with two runs in the bottom of the first and added an insurance run in the fifth to spoil a strong debut from freshman pitcher Fiona Riley, who allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings of work. Stacie Salazar had the win for Vanguard after striking out 10.
Freshman left fielder Ashley Morello and freshman third baseman Jessica Liu each added RBI's in the nightcap, as the Sagehens' rookie class accounted for seven of its eight hits in the second game (and 10 of its 13 overall on the day).
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday when it hosts Pacific (Ore.) at 3 p.m., followed by a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at 12 noon against Chapman.
