Sagehen Win Streak Snapped In Non-League Defeat To Virginia Wesleyan

Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif. - pictured) was 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate, but Virginia Wesleyan used a five-run fourth to capture an 8-3 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday.

The loss ends an eight-game winning streak for the Sagehens, which came into the game a perfect 8-0 during the month of March. Virginia Wesleyan improves to 11-6 with the win.

Pomona-Pitzer took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when it loaded the bases with one out and senior first baseman Bri Marcantoni (Chino Hills, Calif.) drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

However, Virginia Wesleyan erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth to take control of the game. The Sagehens crept back to within 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from senior right fielder Emily Buika (Long Beach, Calif.).

Pomona-Pitzer was a bit unlucky it was unable to get more, as with runners on second and third, freshman Jessica Liu (Alamo, Calif.) had a liner to third knocked down for a 5-3 groundout, and freshman left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) followed with a hard grounder up the middle that was knocked down for a 1-3 groundout to end the inning.

Virginia Wesleyan then ended any comeback hopes in the top of the seventh as Brianna Bertovich hita two-run double to key a three-run rally to make the score 8-2. Hynes had an RBI single in the bottom half to close out the scoring.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday for a SCIAC doubleheader with Cal Lutheran, beginning at 12 p.m.
