Roach, Glass Homer But Sagehens Fall In SCIACs

Redlands, Calif. - Senior Ari Roach (Pinole, Calif. - pictured) and freshman Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.) homered in their first career postseason at-bats, but it wasn't enough as CMS pulled away for a 9-2 win on Friday in the opening round of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

The loss dropped Pomona-Pitzer into an elimination game with top-seeded Redlands, which was upset by Whittier in the first game of the day, and the Bulldogs were able to cruise to an 11-0, five-inning win. The losses end the Sagehens season with a 22-19 record, a new school mark for wins in a season.

Roach got Pomona-Pitzer off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo homer, the first at-bat of her career in the postseason after the Sagehens missed qualifying for the SCIACs in each of the last three years.

CMS, though, used a two-run homer from Emily Lopez to answer back in the bottom half and take a 3-1 lead. Glass led off the second with a solo shot, her first career round-tripper, to cut it to 3-2, but the Sagehens could come no closer. CMS scored once in the third and three times in the fourth inning to take a commanding 7-2 lead, and pitcher Hayley Schultz held the Sagehens to just two singles over the last six innings, from Roach and fellow senior Bri Marcantoni (Chino Hills, Calif.).

Glass had the only hit for the Sagehens in the second game of the day, as three Redlands pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout. Kai Masutani started the offense going with a two-run homer in the first inning and finished with three RBI, while Linda Park added three RBI as well.

Pomona-Pitzer loses three seniors off this season's team, including Roach, Marcantoni and outfielder Emily Buika (Long Beach, Calif.), but returns a talented, young nucleus as it tries to build off its first SCIAC Tournament bid since 2008.
