Claremont, Calif. - Junior first baseman Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif.) hit a two-run, two-out double in the third inning and sophomore Fiona Riley (Berkeley, Calif.) threw a complete-game as Pomona-Pitzer salvaged a doubleheader split with Vanguard by taking a 3-2 win in the nightcap in a season-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Pomona-Pitzer Softball Stadium.
Vanguard took the opening game 10-1 in five innings, as both teams open the season with 1-1 records.
Pomona-Pitzer got a rally going in the bottom of the third inning, as sophomore left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) had a one-out single through the infield. Sophomore third baseman Jessica Liu (Alamo, Calif.) then put down a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by Vanguard for an error to put runners on first and second with one out.
One out later, sophomore catcher Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.) ripped a double down the left field line (double pictured) to score Morello with the game's first run. Hynes then followed with a deep double into the right-center field gap to score two runs and push the Sagehen lead to 3-0.
Vanguard got two of the runs back in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run homer from Brittany Boggs, but Riley was able to maneuver through the rest of the game with no further damage. She worked out of her biggest jam in the fifth, after a leadoff triple from Haley Croce put the tying run on third, but a foul out and strikeout helped get Riley out of the jam, and a fly out to Susanne Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) ended the inning.
Vanguard tried to put a rally together in the seventh, as a one-out single put the tying run on base, but Riley was able to end the game as Kari Bergerson hit a line out to Paige Oliver (Citrus Heights, Calif.) at shortstop.
In the opening game, Hynes had an RBI single to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Kimberley Skoglund hit a two-run homer in the second and Breanne Gomez led off the third with a solo shot to send Vanguard on its way to a 10-1 win, which was shortened to five innings.
Hynes was 2-for-2 in the opener, and senior Kathryn Rabak (Grass Valley, Calif.) was 1-for-1 with a walk. Hynes finished the doubleheader 3-for-5 with three RBI. Croce was 3-for-3 in the opener for the Lions, while Gomez was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader with La Sierra.
