Sagehens Salvage Split At CMS

Claremont, Calif. - Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif. - pictured) tied the game with a two-run, two-out single in the fourth inning and the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team scored the go-ahead run in the sixth as it salvaged a split with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a 5-4 win in the nightcap on Saturday.

CMS won the opening game 5-4 as it moves to 6-5 overall on the year with the split. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the league with the second-game win.

Pomona-Pitzer trailed 4-2 in the fourth, but Morello came through with a bases-loaded two-out, two-run single to right field to plate two runs. Sophomore second baseman Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif.) started the rally with a single, freshman right fielder Susanne Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) walked, and freshman third baseman Aryana Yee (Redwood City, Calif.) reached on a bunt single to load the bases.

In the sixth inning, freshman shortstop Paige Oliver (Citrus Heights, Calif.) drew a walk to lead off the inning, and pinch runner Shannon Julius (Coronado, Calif.) came around to score after moving to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Tokunaga sacrifice. Susanne Boden then had a fielder's choice groundout for an RBI to plate the go-ahead run.

Sophomore pitcher Fiona Riley (Berkeley, Calif.) then made the lead stand up, retiring the side in order in the sixth and allowing just a single in the seventh. Yee was 2-for-3 for the Sagehens in the nightcap.

In the opening game, the Sagehens jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind RBI singles from Tokunaga and sophomore catcher Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.), and took a 4-2 lead in the third on an RBI double from Glass, but CMS came back for the win, using a two-run double in the fourth from Shelby Long and a squeeze play in the fifth from Marie Bradvica.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend when it travels to Chapman for a Saturday doubleheader.
