Softball Splits One-Run Games With Cal Lutheran

Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif. - pictured) was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the opener and stole home in the nightcap, as Pomona-Pitzer split two games with Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

Pomona-Pitzer took the opening game 4-3 and then fell int he nightcap 3-2 as the Sagehens move to 4-10 overall and 2-8 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran sees its record move to 4-14 and 3-11 in the SCIAC.

Sophomore second baseman Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif.) was 3-for-3 in the opening game with two runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore center Leah Bleichner (Simi Valley, Calif.) had three outfield assists in the twinbill, including a double play to end the first game. Cal Lutheran shortstop Kelly Lockwood was 7-for-7 in the doubleheader, including 4-for-4 with two homers and three RBI in the opener in a losing cause.

Morello got things started in the first inning of the opening game with a single, and came home on a two-out double from sophomore catcher Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.). Morello then added a two-out RBI single in the second inning to score Tokunaga to stretch the lead to 2-0.

Lockwood halved the lead to start the third inning with a solo homer, but the Sagehens tacked on two more in the fourth to stretch the lead to 4-1, as Tokunaga had an RBI single and Bleichner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Lockwood had an RBI single in the fifth inning, and a solo homer with one out in the seventh to make the score 4-3. After a shallow single from Kayla Sakamoto put the go ahead run on base, Shannon Tinsley drove a ball into deep right-center that Bleichner was able to run down on the front of the warning track. She turned and unleashed a bullet to first base to nip Sakamoto, who was aggressive on the basepaths and was almost to second base, looking to score the tying run if the ball fell in the gap.

Sophomore pitcher Fiona Riley (Berkeley, Calif.) went the distance to get the win for the Sagehens, allowing seven hits and striking out four.

The nightcap saw Cal Lutheran do all of its damage in the second with three runs. Sakamoto had an RBI single and pitcher Shonna Christianson helped her own cause with an RBI single as well.

Pomona-Pitzer got one run back in the bottom half on a deep sacrifice fly from freshman third baseman Paige Oliver (Citrus Heights, Calif.) and then added another in the fifth. Morello reached second to start the inning on a Cal Lutheran error, and freshman shortstop Aryana Yee (Redwood City, Calif.) singled to put runners on first and third and none out. The Sagehens then went with the double steal, as Morello sprinted home when the throw went down to second and just slid in under the tag.

Yee was left stranded, though, and Christianson set the Sagehens down 1-2-3 in the seventh with some solid defense behind her, as the Regals were able to keep slappers Morello and Yee off the basepaths to lead off the inning with tricky plays on infield grounders.

Yee was 2-for-4 in the nightcap for Pomona-Pitzer, accounting for two of her team's five hits. Lockwood was 3-for-3 with a walk, and Sakamoto was 3-for-4 with an RBI for Cal Lutheran. Riley pitched her second complete game for the Sagehens, but took the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer has a pair of non-conference doubleheaders this week, facing Puget Sound on Tuesday at 2, and Williams on Thursday at 12 noon.
