Boden Drives In Two, Saves Two More In 8-5 Win Over La Sierra

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman right fielder Susanne Boden (Atlanta, Ga. - pictured) had a two-run double at the plate and had two run-saving defensive plays in the outfield as the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team defeated La Sierra 8-5 on Wednesday.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 10-11 on the season with their fourth straight victory, and sixth in their last seven games. La Sierra falls to 4-26 on the season with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer scored at least one run in all six innings that it came to plate. Starting pitcher Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif.) had an RBI single in the first, and sophomore third baseman Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.) had an RBI single in the second. Boden then had a big two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-0.

She then made an equally big defensive play in the top of the fourth, as La Sierra plated two runs on two wild pitches to cut the lead in half and had a runner on second with two outs. Taylor Saenz-Griego then hit a ball that seemed destined to fall into left-center field with the third run for the Golden Eagles, but Boden made a grab at full extension right off the grasstops to rob La Sierra of a run.

The Sagehens tacked on a run in the fourth on an error and two more in the fifth on an RBI single from freshman catcher Lindsay McCord (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and an RBI fielder's choice from junior first baseman Lauren Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) to make the score 7-2. La Sierra scored a run in the top of the sixth, before sophomore Fiona Riley (Berkeley, Calif.) was called on in relief and pitched out of a jam, leaving the bases loaded.

The Sagehens then made it 6-for-6 with run-scoring innings as Riley had a bloop down the right field line fall in for a double, and sophomore center fielder Leah Bleichner (Simi Valley, Calif.) followed with an RBI double to left-center to make the score 8-3.

La Sierra wouldn't go quietly, though, as it hit three doubles in the top of the ninth to cut the lead to 8-5 with one out. Riley bounced back to get the next batter to strike out, and the Golden Eagles appeared ready to cut the lead to 8-6 as Jennifer Duenas hit one through the infield to right. However, Susanne Boden charged the ball and came up throwing to first and nipped Duenas at first for a 9-3 putout to end the game.

Five different players had multi-hit games for the Sagehens, led by a 2-for-3 effort from Hynes, who also got the win to improve to 3-0 on the year. Glass was also 2-for-3 at the leadoff spot in the order, while Bleichner, freshman Aryana Yee (Redwood City, Calif.) and sophomore Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif.) added two hits as well.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action for a busy weekend, as it hosts La Verne on Friday at 2 p.m. and Redlands on Saturday at 12 noon.
