La Verne Takes Two From Sagehens

La Verne Takes Two From Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The La Verne Softball team scored three in the sixth to take a 3-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the opener, and then earned a 4-0 win in the nightcap to complete the sweep on Friday at Pomona-Pitzer Softball Stadium.

The wins improve La Verne's record to 19-9 overall and 11-7 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 10-13 overall and 4-10 in league play.

Freshman Paige Oliver (Citrus Heights, Calif. - pictured) got the Sagehens an early lead with a two-run double in the second inning of the opener. Senior designated player Kathryn Rabak (Grass Valley, Calif.) started the inning with a single and sophomore second baseman Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif.) added a two out single to put two runners on. Oliver then followed with a two-run double into right center.

The lead held until the sixth, when the Leopards led off with three straight singles, with Melisa Sponholz hitting the third to drive in a run. The Sagehens then turned a double play on a sacrifice fly attempt, with Susanne Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) catching a fly ball and junior first baseman Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif.) throwing the relay home to get the tag at the plate.

However, La Verne was able to tie the game on an error and Mackenize Dutton broke the tie with an RBI double to make the score 3-2. Oliver walked to lead off the seventh, and got as far as third base after a sacrifice and a flyout, but she was left stranded.

Rebecca Ho threw 5.1 innings of one-hit relief to get the win for the Leopards.

In the nightcap, the Sagehens were held to six hits as they were shut out by Rachel Hong (4 IP) and Lindsay Godwin (3 IP). Taylor Williams was 4-for-4 for La Verne, which scored two runs in the first and two in the third. Oliver doubled off the top of the wall in the seventh to nearly spoil the shutout bid.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow for a 12 noon doubleheader with Redlands.
