Whittier Takes Two From Sagehens

Whittier, Calif. - The Whittier Softball team defended its home field with two wins over the Sagehens on Sunday, taking the opener 10-0 and winning the nightcap 7-3.

With the losses, the Sagehens slip to 11-18 overall and 5-15 in the SCIAC. Whittier improves to 21-9 overall and 11-9 in conference play. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed until Sunday.

Pomona-Pitzer managed just two hits in the opener off Whittier starter Courtney DeLano, singles from junior Lauren Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.). Mecredez Cundiff hit a pair of home runs for the Poets, a three-run shot in the second inning and a two-run homer in the third to give her team a 7-0 lead.

Morello started out the nightcap with a single on a high slap back to the circle, starting a two-run first inning that was helped by four Whittier errors. However, the Poets regrouped to score three runs in the second to take the lead and added three more unearned runs in the fourth to pull away.

Sophomore Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif. - pictured) had an RBI single in the sixth, the only RBI of the day for the Sagehens. Junior Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif.) was 2-for-3 in the nightcap for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday for a home doubleheader against CMS, beginning at 2 p.m.
