Late Lead Gets Away As Sagehens Swept At Cal Lutheran

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran Softball team came back to win 5-4 in eight innings in the opening game before completing a sweep with a 9-1 win in the nightcap against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

With the losses, Pomona-Pitzer falls to 11-22 overall and 5-19 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran improves to 14-20 overall and 9-15 in league play.

Freshman Susanne Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) had a big day at the plate for the Sagehens, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored in the twinbill.

Pomona-Pitzer took a 3-2 lead in the opening game in the fifth, when Susanne Boden walked and came around to score on an RBI single from older sister Lauren Boden (Atlanta, Ga.). Cal Lutheran came right back to tie the score on an RBI double from Blake Lewis.

The same combination put the Sagehens in front again in the seventh, as Susanne Boden led off with a single and came home off the bat of Lauren Boden (although the play resulted in an error). Sophomore left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) added a key single to set the table.

However, the Regals once again answered as Kayla Sakamoto singled and went to third on a sacrifice, setting up a sac fly from Lewis to tie the game. Katelyn Downing then ended the game with a walk-off double in the eighth.

The Sagehens scored their only run in the nightcap when Susanne Boden doubled and came home on an RBI groundout from Lauren Boden, as the duo combined on their third run of the day. However, pitcher Shonna Christianson was 3-for-3 to help her own cause as she earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits. The Regals finished off the game with four-run fifth to enforce the run rule, as Christianson had an RBI single and Brittany Labbe had an RBI double.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action next weekend, when it travels to La Verne on Friday and concludes its season with a home doubleheader against Occidental on Saturday.
