Softball Drops Two To La Verne

La Verne, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at La Verne on Friday, falling 6-1 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.

The losses drop Pomona-Pitzer's record to 11-24 overall and 5-21 in the SCIAC.

In the second game, junior pitcher Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif. - pictured) helped her own cause with an RBI single as part of a two-run first, but La Verne tied it back up in the bottom half on a wild pitch. The Leopards broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth with a bases loaded walk, and freshman third baseman Paige Oliver (Citrus Heights, Calif.) had a one-out double in the seventh to give Pomona-Pitzer some hope, but she was left stranded.

Hynes was 2-for-3 at the plate and allowed only three hits in the circle, but took the tough luck loss. Sophomore left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) was also 2-for-3.

Raeven Freret gave La Verne all the offense it would need in the opener with a two-run homer in the opening game. Sophomore second baseman Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif.) had an RBI single in the second to cut the lead in half, but the Sagehens left the bases loaded with one out and didn't get any closer.

The Sagehens conclude their 2013 season with a home doubleheader against Occidental tomorrow at 12 noon.
