Sagehens Close Out Season With Tough Loss To Occidental

Claremont, Calif. - Occidental scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie and capture a 5-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer to complete a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

Occidental also took the opening game 6-1, as it improves to 14-26 and 5-23 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer ends its season at 11-26 and 5-23 in league play.

The game-winning run was scored after Mariah Montgomery led off with a single, and Ali Goldberg followed by pushing a bunt past onrushing pitcher Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif.) for a single to put two runners on and nobody out. After the go-ahead run came home on an error, right fielder Susanne Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) turned a sacrfice fly attempt into a double play, easily gunning out an insurance run at the plate.

The double play was one of several strong plays defensively by the Sagehen outfield. Boden had earlier thrown a runner out at first on a 9-3 putout, while sophomore center fielder Leah Bleichner (Simi Valley, Calif.) also threw a runner out at the plate, with the tag applied by freshman catcher Lindsay McCord (Lake Oswego, Ore. - play at the plate pictured).

Trailing 5-4 the Sagehens had three good at-bats in the bottom half, as Susanne Boden drove one to deep center, sophomore left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) made good contact on a flyout to left, and junior pinch-hitter Stephanie Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a line drive to center, but all three resulted in outs.

Pomona-Pitzer trailed 4-2 in the third, but McCord had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third, and junior first baseman Lauren Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) tied it in the fourth with an RBI double. The Sagehens had some bad luck in RBI situations as Morello lined out to second, sophomore second baseman Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif.) lined out to shortstop, and McCord lined out to the pitcher.

The reverse was also true, as with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the sixth, Julia Nicholson hit a line drive off Hynes (former high school teammates at Upland) that seemed destined to travel down the line for extra bases, but sophomore third baseman Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.) made a leaping catch at the top of her glove to end the threat.

Glass also got Pomona-Pitzer off to a 1-0 lead in the opening game, with an RBI single in the first to score Morello, who led off with a single. However, Occidental scored the next six runs for the 6-1 win, as the top five batters in the Tigers line-up all had two hits. Morello (2-for-4), Glass (2-for-3) and Susanne Boden (2-for-3) all had two hits for the Sagehens in the opener, while freshman shortstop Aryana Yee (Redwood City, Calif.) was 2-for-2 in the nightcap.

Pomona-Pitzer returns its entire line-up, as the team's only senior, Kathryn Rabak (Grass Valley, Calif.) was injured and did not play over the final three weeks. A clutch hitter who had two walk-off hits a year ago, including a three-run homer in a 7-6 win over Staten Island, was honored before the game for Senior Day.
