Sagehens Rally, But Fall Short In SCIAC Opener

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team tied the nightcap of two at Cal Lutheran with two runs in the seventh, but fell in the bottom half 6-5 as the Regals completed a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

Cal Lutheran also took the opener 5-2, as the losses drop Pomona-Pitzer to 0-7 on the year, including 0-2 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Sophomore Aryana Yee (pictured) hit a clutch one-out RBI triple in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4, scoring junior Ashley Morello (2-for-4), who singled. Senior Caitlyn Hynes then followed with a sacrifice fly to get Pomona-Pitzer back level at 5-5. However, Blake Lewis had an RBI triple in the bottom half to give the Regals the win.

Pomona-Pitzer led 3-0 in the third after a two-run homer from junior Meagan Tokunaga, but Cal Lutheran answered with five runs in the fourth to go ahead 5-3.
 
In the first game, Cal Lutheran built a 5-0 lead and withstood RBI singles from Hynes in the fifth and freshman Katie Page in the sixth to win 5-2. Morello was 2-for-3 for the Sagehens at the plate in the opener, and 4-for-7 on the day.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Redlands in a SCIAC doubleheader at 12 noon.
