Softball Drops Twinbill To Whittier

Claremont, Calif. - Mickala Gonzalez hit three home runs in the doubleheader to lead the Whittier Softball team to an 8-3, 6-0 sweep of Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon.

With the sweep, Whittier improves to 11-3 overall and 7-3 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens fall to 1-12 overall and 1-7 in league play.

Gonzalez hit a solo shot in the fourth to make the score 3-0 and after the Sagehens got one back in the bottom of the fourth, Gonzalez added a three-run shot in the sixth inning. Pomona-Pitzer got some offense going in the seventh as Susanne Boden led off with a double to left-center (double pictured) and older sister Lauren Boden added an RBI single, but the Sagehens couldn't come closer and fell 8-3.

The nightcap saw Samantha Blum throw a six-hit shutout for the Poets. Courtney DeLano, who won the opening game in the circle, gave her all the support she would need with an RBI single in the second. Gonzalez added her third homer of the day in the sixth, a two-run shot to make the score 4-0.

Junior Ashley Morello was 3-for-6 on the day (2-for-3 in the opener, 1-for-3 in the nightcap), while Lauren Boden was 3-for-7 (2-for-4, 1-for-3). Sophomore Aryana Yee was also 2-for-4 in the opener.

The Sagehens will be back in action next weekend for a road doubleheader at Chapman on Friday and a home doubleheader against CMS on Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m.
