Cal Lutheran Takes Two From Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran Softball team scored three times in the seventh to win the opening game 4-1 and held on for a 6-4 win the nightcap to complete a sweep on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer Softball Stadium.

With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 5-22 overall on the season and 2-14 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran improves to 16-8 overall and 10-4 in league play.

Pomona-Pitzer tied the opening game 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth as Susanne Boden had a two-out RBI double to center (double pictured) to score Ashley Morello from second. Morello led off the inning with a single, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lauren Boden.

A walk, a single and a sacrifice put runners on second and third and one out in the top of the seventh for Cal Lutheran, and Stephanie Martello broke the tie with a sacrifice fly. Danika Green and Kelly Lockwood then followed with RBIs to stretch the lead to 4-1. Morello picked up her third hit of the game (3-for-4) in the bottom of the seventh, but that was all the Sagehens could muster.

Morello was 1-for-3 in the nightcap with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth that helped cut a 6-1 deficit down to 6-4.  Susanne Boden singled in the seventh to give the Sagehens a chance, but Cal Lutheran was able to hold on. Susanne Boden was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, while Sofia Baig was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Sagehens, plating a run on a squeeze bunt that made the score 2-1 in the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday for a home doubleheader against Chapman.
