Sagehens Rally For Split With Chapman

Claremont, Calif. - Aryana Yee and Caitlyn Hynes both hit triples in a four-run fifth inning to help the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team to a 6-4 win over Chapman in the second of two games on Friday.

Chapman took the opening game 7-0 on a three-hit shutout from Cassie Oregel. With the split, the Sagehens move to 6-23 overall and 3-15 in the SCIAC, while Chapman improves to 17-13 overall and 10-8 in league play.

Chapman took a 3-2 lead in the nightcap on a two-run homer from Taylor Cartwright in the fifth. In the bottom half, Yee led off with a triple and came home on an infield grounder from Quinn Sheehy to third base. Yee broke on the throw, and Sheehy was safe at first when Chapman didn't touch the bag before throwing home, with Yee able to slide in safely (tying run pictured).

Lauren Boden then followed with a sacrifice bunt and also reached on a low throw, and Hynes followed with a two-run triple to give the Sagehens a 5-3 lead. Hynes would then come in to score on a passed ball to add an insurance run.

Chapman was able to add a run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but freshman Eden Griffen got a routine fly ball to center to end the game and pick up the complete game win.  Hynes finished 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Sagehens, while Susanne Boden added a pinch-hit RBI single in the fourth to put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 2-1.

Chapman scored four times in the first inning of the opening game, and that was all the offense Oregel would need as she struck out six to get the shutout. Ashley Morello was 2-for-3 for the Sagehens, accounting for two of the team's three hits (Sheehy added the other).

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader at Redlands, beginning at 12 noon.
