Softball Wins In Ninth To Salvage Split At Whittier

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team shook off a seventh-inning comeback from Whittier to score twice in the ninth and earn a 5-3 win over the Poets in the second of two games on Saturday.

Whittier took the opening game 6-1 as the Sagehens move to 7-26 overall with the split, including 4-18 in conference play. Whittier moves to 23-13 and 13-11 in the SCIAC.

The Sagehens led 3-0 in the nightcap, but Whittier scored once in the sixth and then rallied with two runs in the seventh after Pomona-Pitzer had two outs and nobody outs. The Poets had a chance to win in the eighth with a runner on third and one out, but freshman pitcher Eden Griffin got out of the jam with a pop up and a flyout.

Junior Meagan Tokunaga (pictured) then started the winning rally in the ninth with a pinch-hit double to lead off. Ashley Morello walked and two outs later, Susanne Boden walked to load the bases. Morello came home on a passed ball for the go-ahead run, and Caitlyn Hynes added an RBI single to make the score 5-3.

Griffen then worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to end the game with no further Poet comebacks. The Sagehens took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings, scoring on an error in the first, and then getting an RBI double from Morello in the second, as well as an RBI bunt single from Quinn Sheehy.

The Sagehens led 1-0 in the first inning in the opener after Morello opened the game off with a single and came home on an RBI single from Aryana Yee. Whittier answered, though, with three in the first and three in the second and held on from there for the 6-1 win as Samantha Mellano finished 4-for-4 with three RBI.

Morello was 2-for-4 in both games for the Sagehens to pace the offense, while Lauren Boden added a 2-for-4 game in the nightcap.

The Sagehens return to action next Saturday for a road doubleheader at CMS, beginning at 12 p.m.
