Pomona-Pitzer Takes Opener From CMS

Claremont, Calif. - Junior second baseman Meagan Tokunaga had a two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth and freshman pitcher Bianca Cockrell left the bases loaded in the bottom half to finish off a complete game as the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team took the first of two from CMS 2-1 on Saturday.

The Athenas won the nightcap 8-0 in six innings as the teams settled for a split on the day, with Pomona-Pitzer moving to 8-27 on the season and 5-19 in the SCIAC, while CMS moves to 23-12 overall and 18-8 in the league.

Sophomore third baseman Aryana Yee started off the top of the eighth by reaching on an error and then stole second. She moved to third on a groundout, and after senior shortstop Lauren Boden reached on a walk, Tokunaga came through with an RBI single to plate the go-ahead run.

CMS loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out on two singles and a hit by pitch, but Cockrell bore down and got a big strikeout for the second out before ending the game on a grounder to shortstop.

Sophomore right fielder Susanne Boden was 3-for-4 in the opener, including a leadoff single in the second before coming around to score the first Pomona-Pitzer run on an error. Cockrell scattered nine hits and struck out two for the win.

CMS bounced back to win the nightcap 8-0 on a two-hitter from Keililani Minami. Senior first baseman Caitlyn Hynes and freshman left fielder Sofia Baig accounted for the Sagehen hits in the game.

Pomona-Pitzer will conclude its 2014 season with a pair of home doubleheaders next weekend, facing Occidental on Friday at 2 p.m. and La Verne on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
