Boden Sisters Help Sagehens Split With Occidental

Claremont, Calif. - All four Boden sisters started and combined for seven hits and five RBI as the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team defeated Occidental 7-4 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Occidental took the opening game 4-2 as the teams split the twinbill, with Pomona-Pitzer moving to 9-28 on the season and 6-20 in the SCIAC, while the Tigers move to 6-32 overall and 3-23 in the league.

Seniors Stephanie Boden (pictured) and Lauren Boden were both 2-for-3 with an RBI in the nightcap (on the eve of their Senior Day tomorrow against La Verne), while fellow senior triplet Allison Boden was 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Sophomore Susanne Boden, the younger sister of the three triplets, was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

Allison Boden gave the Sagehens a 2-1 lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning. Occidental tied the score in the top of the third, but Susanne Boden hit a two-run triple to give Pomona-Pitzer the lead for good. Lauren Boden then followed with a suicide squeeze with two strikes that bounced perfectly in front of the plate and turned into an RBI single to make the score 5-2.

Occidental pulled within 5-3 in the top of the fifth, and Susanne Boden and Lauren Boden led off with singles in the bottom half. The Sagehens loaded the bases with nobody out, and Occidental got two straight force outs at home plate to nearly escape the jam, but Stephanie Boden smoked a single to left field to make the score 6-3.

The teams again traded runs in the sixth, with Lindsay McCord getting an RBI double for the Sagehens in the bottom half. Eden Griffen finished off her complete game win in the seventh, as Sofia Baig recorded the final out with a catch at the wall in left field.

In the opener, Occidental led 4-0 in the seventh and had two outs and nobody on base. Emily Pham was just one out from a one-hitter, but after a walk, McCord hit an RBI double to put the Sagehens on the board, and Baig followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2. Ashley Morello then singled to put two runners on, and Quinn Sheehy hit a high chopper back to the circle, which Pham jumped in the air to pull in and barely nipped Sheehy at first for the final out of the game.

Senior Caitlyn Hynes was 1-for-2 with a walk in the opening game and stole two bases, improving to 13-13 stealing this season and 22-22 in the last two years.

Pomona-Pitzer will close out the 2014 season tomorrow with a doubleheader against La Verne at 12 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Boden triplets and Hynes, who will be honored pregame.
