Whitworth Takes Two From Sagehens On Opening Day

Claremont, Calif. - Madi Perez threw a three-hit shutout in the opening game and Whitworth broke open a pitcher's duel late in the nightcap, as the Pirates defeated Pomona-Pitzer 6-0 and 7-1 on Friday in the season opener for the Sagehens.

Whitworth improves to 3-1 on the young season after splitting two with Redlands yesterday, while the Sagehens open their season at 0-2. The second game was shortened to six innings due to darkness.

Freshman catcher Natalie Ireland (pictured) had hits in each game of the doubleheader, as did senior outfielder Ashley Morello. Freshmen Emily Rockhill and Sam Carlson added hits in their first day of collegiate action.

Shannon Wessel was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the opener for Whitworth, driving in the first two runs on an RBI double in the third and an RBI single in the fifth. Kelsey Stroshine capped off the day with a three-run homer in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Rockhill and Makayla Lefever each took shutouts in the fifth inning of the nightcap, before Megan John broke the tie with a pinch-hit RBI double in the fifth and Peyton McMahon added a two-run double to cap off the inning and make the score 4-0. The Sagehens got a run back in the bottom half, as Paige Oliver walked, and after singles from Carlson and senior Meagan Tokunaga, came home when Whitworth was unable to field a two-out grounder up the middle.

However, Tessa Matthews added a two-run double in the sixth as part of a three-run inning as Whitworth pulled ahead 7-1.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action tomorrow for a single game at St. Katherine in San Marcos, California.
