Carlson Walk-Off Homer Keys Sagehen Sweep

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Sam Carlson (pictured) hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning in the opening game of a doubleheader to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team to a sweep of Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon.

The final of the first game was 3-1 after Puget Sound tied the score up with a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Pomona-Pitzer won the nightcap 9-0 in a game that was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.

A Susanne Boden RBI single in the third appeared to be holding up as the difference as Pomona-Pitzer sophomore pitcher Bianca Cockrell took a shutout in the seventh inning.  However, Bailee Larson homoered to lead off the seventh and tie the score 1-1.

Cockrell shook off the homer and retired the next three batters in order, before Pomona-Pitzer left two runners on in the bottom of the seventh. Cockrell worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, and Boden had a one-out single in the bottom half to set the stage for Carlson, who ended the game with one swing of the bat for her first collegiate homer.

Boden and senior center fielder Leah Bleichner (2-for-3) each had two hits for the Sagehens, while Cockrell went the distance, allowing four hits and striking out nine to get the win.

The nightcap required no drama, as Pomona-Pitzer scored six times in the second inning, all with two outs, to take control and cruise to a 9-0 win as sophomore Eden Griffen earned a five-hit shutout. Boden was 2-for-3 for her second straight multi-hit game, while junior third baseman Paige Oliver was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and senior second baseman Meagan Tokunaga was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Friday when it hosts Redlands for a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader to open SCIAC play.
