Cal Lutheran Takes Two From Sagehens

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team had early leads in both games, but Cal Lutheran was able to use big innings late to take 4-1 and 7-4 wins over the Sagehens on Friday afternoon in a SCIAC doubleheader.

With the losses, the Sagehens are now 12-18 and 7-11 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran improves to 16-13 overall and 12-7 in conference play.

Freshman designated player Kelsey Buchanan (pictured) had RBI singles in the first innings of both games to give the Sagehens early 1-0 leads. In the opener, that lead held until the fifth when Cal Lutheran scored four runs, capped off by a three-run homer by Blake Lewis, to earn the win.

In the nightcap, the Sagehens had a 2-0 lead after the first and after Cal Lutheran went ahead 3-2 with three runs in the third, junior right fielder Susanne Boden tied it with an RBI double in the fifth. However, once again a four-run inning gave the Regals control late, as this time they pushed across four in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. Olivia Leyva had the go ahead RBI single, Blake Lewis had an RBI single, and Amanda Lewis tacked on a two-run double.

The Sagehens got one back in the top of the seventh on a two-out error, but could come no closer. Buchanan and senior outfielder Ashley Morello both went 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

Pomona-Pitzer returns home tomorrow to face La Verne in a doubleheader at 12 noon. Between games, there will be a Strike Out Cancer ceremony, as the program will join the other SCIAC programs in helping to raise money for Annalise Fischer, a local softball player fighting cancer.
