Sagehens Drop Pair Of Pitcher's Duels To CMS

Claremont, Calif. - The CMS Softball team won the opening game 2-1 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh and took the nightcap 2-0 as it swept a pair of games from the Sagehens on Saturday afternoon.

The losses drop Pomona-Pitzer to 14-22 overall on the season, and 9-15 in the SCIAC. CMS improves to 22-10 overall and 16-8 in the SCIAC, putting it one game out of first.

Senior outfielder Ashley Morello was 4-for-5 in the double (2-for-3 in the opener, 2-for-2 in the nightcap) to push her hitting streak to 15 games. She led off the sixth inning of the opener with a single, stole second and came home on an error to tie the game 1-1. However, Tara Robinson led off the seventh with an infield single, stole second and came home on a single up the middle from Alexa Heydenberk to give the Athenas the walk off win.

Sophomore pitcher Bianca Cockrell (pictured) allowed only five hits (three through the first six innings), but took the tough luck loss.

The nightcap saw CMS score two unearned runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead off of sophomore starter Eden Griffen, and that was all of the scoring in the game. The Sagehens mustered seven hits and walked twice, but left eight runners on against three CMS pitchers who combined on the shutout.

Pomona-Pitzer had its best chance in the third, as senior Meagan Tokunaga led off with a double and went to third on a Morello single. After Morello stole second, the Sagehens had runners on second and third and nobody out, but Andrea Jewett retired the next three batters to escape the jam.

The Sagehens will be in action on Friday for their final regular season home games against Occidental, beginning at 2 p.m.
