Sagehens Celebrate Senior Day With Two Big Wins

Claremont. Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team honored its three seniors prior to the doubleheader and then swept Occidental 13-1 and 7-1 on Friday afternoon in its final home games of the 2015 season.

The wins improve the Sagehens to 16-22 overall and 11-15 in the SCIAC, while Occidental falls to 5-21 in conference games with the two losses.

Meagan Tokunaga (pictured, left), Leah Bleichner (center) and Ashley Morello (right) played their final games in their home stadium and combined for six hits in the opening game. Morello was 3-for-4 (and then 2-for-4 in the nightcap) to stretch her hitting streak to 17 games.

Occidental took 1-0 leads in the top of the first both times, but the Sagehens responded with big innings. In the opener, Pomona-Pitzer scored twice in the first to take the lead and then four times in the second on a two-run double from junior Susanne Boden and a two-run homer from freshman Kelsey Buchanan. The Sagehens then added six in the fourth, including a three-run double from freshman Natalie Ireland

Buchanan was 3-for-3 with three RBI in the opening game, while Boden had four runs batted in. Sophomore Bianca Cockrell went the distance in the circle to get the win.

In the nightcap, the Sagehens scored all seven of their runs in the second inning, capped off by a three-run homer from Boden, giving her seven RBI on the day. Morello broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single, sophomore Quinn Sheehy had a two-run single, and then Boden followed with a round-tripper to break the game open.

Sophomore pitcher Eden Griffin got the win in the nightcap with five solid innings, while freshman Emily Rockhill threw the last two in relief.

Pomona-Pitzer concludes its 2015 season tomorrow with a road doubleheader at Whittier.
