Softball Closes Out 2015 With Win, Splits With Whitter

Whittier, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team bounced back from a perfect game from Whittier's Samantha Blum in the opener to take the nightcap 9-2 and end its 2015 season with a split on Saturday afternoon.

The Sagehens conclude their season at 17-23 on the season, including 12-16 in the SCIAC. Whittier, meanwhile, earns at least a share of the SCIAC title and the right to host the SCIAC Tournament with a 19-9 record, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 3-1 record against the league champions this season.

The one win for Whittier in the season series was the opener on Saturday, as Blum retired all 21 batters she faced. She struck out only one, and got some support from her defense, as sophomore shortstop Quinn Sheehy was robbed of a double in deep right field. Senior left fielder Ashley Morello, who came into the game with a 17-game hit streak, ended it in unlucky fashion with three lineouts.

The nightcap saw Blum give Whittier a 1-0 lead in the second, but junior right fielder Susanne Boden (pictured) tied it up with an RBI double in the third, and senior Meagan Tokunaga gave the Sagehens the lead for good in the fourth with an RBI single.

Pomona-Pitzer then erupted for seven runs in the sixth to break it open. Junior Aryana Yee had a two-run single, Sheehy and Boden followed with RBI singles and freshman Kelsey Buchanan added a two-run double. Boden finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, while sophomore Eden Griffen wne the distance in the circle to get the win.

The Sagehens lose seniors Morello, Tokunaga and Leah Bleichner, but will return a talented nucleus next season as they try to build off this year's improvement.
