Softball: Sagehens Fall In Double Header Against La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer softball team fell in both games to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent La Verne 3-2 and 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Wig Beach Field.

The Sagehens struck first in the top of the first as senior Aryana Yee singled to get on and freshman Liz Rodarte helped out her own caused and drove in Yee with an RBI single up the middle.

La Verne came back to tie the game up at 1-1 in the top of the third after Alexis Schiff grounded out to the shortstop to bring home Carly Condon.

Pomona-Pitzer reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third as sophomore Kelsey Buchanan beat out a ground ball to second base to bring home sophomore Emily Rockhill to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead.

La Verne took its first lead of the day in the top of the fourth as they scored two runs off of back-to-back RBI singles to take a 3-2 lead.

The Sagehens threatened in the bottom of the seventh as senior Paige Oliver stood at third base with two outs and junior Sofia Baig at the plate. Baig hit a deep fly ball to center field but only reached the warning track as La Verne was able to hold off Pomona-Pitzer and take game one.

The Leopards struck first in game two as Victoria Ball singled up the middle and Alexis Schiff came around to score to give La Verne an early 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens came back in the bottom of the fourth as Rockhill brought home sophomore Sam Carlson on a sacrifice fly and Rodarte doubled home Carlson to give Pomona-Pitzer a 2-1 lead.

La Verne came back to take the lead in the sixth as Katherine Kibbe drove home two Leopards on a double down the left field line and Melissa Garcia hit a two-run homer to left field to give La Verne a 5-2 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer chipped away at the Leopards' lead as Rodarte singled home Rockhill to cut the lead down to 5-3 going into the seventh.

The Leopards closed out the Sagehens in the seventh as they took both games of the double header.

The Sagehens next take the field as they travel to SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, March 5th at 12 p.m.
