CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team defeated non-conference opponent Westminster (Mo.) 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Wig Beach Field.
Pomona-Pitzer had to play from behind as Erica Burney started the Bluejays off with a two-run homer in the top of the first to give Westminster a 2-0 lead.
The Sagehens got one back in the bottom of the first as senior Aryana Yee scored on a passed ball to cut the lead down to 2-1.
The Bluejays got three more runs in the top of the third as the Sagehens walked in a run and Westminster followed that up with a two-run double to left field to extend their lead to 5-1.
The Sagehens scored another run in the bottom of the third as senior Paige Oliver came around on a wild pitch to cut the lead down to 5-2 after three innings of play.
Pomona-Pitzer had their big inning in the bottom of the fifth as junior Bianca Cockrell hit an RBI single to bring home Yee and sophomore Kelsey Buchanan blasted a two-run RBI double to left field to give the Sagehens a 7-5 lead late in the game.
Westminster threatened to come back in the top of the seventh as they were able to score one run on a sacrifice fly but Cockrell struck out the final batter of the game with the tying run in scoring position to seal the win for Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens next take the field as they host their makeup double header against Chapman on Friday, April 1st starting at 2:00 p.m. at Wig Beach Field.
