CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team split in their double header with Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Whittier with an 8-2 loss in game one and a 4-3 win in game two on Saturday afternoon at Wig Beach Field.
The Sagehens got on top in the bottom of the first as junior Bianca Cockrell kept her hot bat alive as she blasted a solo home run to give Pomona-Pitzer and early 1-0 lead.
Whittier responded with a home run of its own in the top of the second as Natalia Sanchez hit a two-run homer to give the Poets a 2-1 lead.
Whittier homered again in the top of the fourth off of the bat of Kacey Whitney as the Poets held a 3-1 lead over the Sagehens.
The Poets scored three more in the top of the fifth as they plated one on a throwing error by the Sagehens defense and followed that up with a two-run RBI double to extend its lead to 6-1.
Whittier added two more runs to its lead in the top of the seventh with a RBI single and a sacrifice fly and held off the Sagehens to take game one of the double header.
Pomona-Pitzer struck early again in game two as the Sagehens took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second after senior Paige Oliver singled home sophomore Natalie Ireland and senior Susanne Boden singled home Oliver and sophomore Sam Carlson.
Whittier scored its first runs in the top of the fifth as Megan Heal doubled home two Poets to cut the lead down to 3-2.
The Poets scored one run in the seventh on a play where the final out was made in a rundown to give the Sagehens a win in game two of the double header.
The Sagehens next take the field as they host SCIAC opponent Occidental on Saturday, April 9th at 12:00 p.m. at Wig Beach Field.
