CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team fell Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Occidental in both games of their SCIAC double header on Saturday afternoon at Wig Beach Field.
The Tigers struck first as Bailey Stevens hit a two-run home run to left center to give Occidental an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Occidental reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh as back-to-back RBI singles gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
The Sagehens responded with a big sixth inning as Ireland drove home sophomore Missy Pekarek and sophomore Kelsey Buchanan on an RBI single to center field and junior Sofia Baig followed that up with an RBI single through the left side of the infield as Pomona-Pitzer took over the lead at 5-4 heading into the seventh.
Occidental came back to tie the game on a wild pitch to force extra innings and took the lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI single to right field. The Tigers shut down the Sagehens' offense late in the game and took game one of the double header in eight innings.
The Tigers started off game two with another two-run homer, this time off of the bat of Alex Battest as Occidental took a 2-0 lead in the first.
The Sagehens also struck in their first at bats as Cockrell singled home Yee and freshman Liz Rodarte hit a big RBI single through the left side to score Buchanan and Cockrell to take a 3-2 lead heading into the second inning.
The Tigers went on to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the second as Natalie Glover brought home one more on a ground ball to first base.
Pomona-Pitzer took the lead in the bottom half of the second inning as Rodarte lined a double down the left field line to bring home Buchanan and Cockrell to give the Sagehens a 5-3 lead.
The Tigers answered with a big fourth inning as Battest hit her second two-run home run of the game and Madison Romero hit an RBI double to take a 6-5 lead.
Cora Roberts added one more to the Occidental lead with an RBI single in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 7-5 over the Sagehens.
The Tigers held off the Sagehens' offense in the seventh and completed their sweep over Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens next take the field as they travel to SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran for a double header on Sunday, April 10th at 12:00 p.m.
