Softball: Pomona-Pitzer Sweeps Double Header At Cal Lutheran

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team swept Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Cal Lutheran in a double header by the scores of 8-6 and 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at Hutton Field.

Cal Lutheran jumped out to a lead in the very first inning as they connected on three RBI singles and a sacrifice fly to take a 5-0 advantage over the Sagehens.

The Sagehens started to battle back as they got on the board in the top of the third as junior Bianca Cockrell doubled home junior Sofia Baig and senior Aryana Yee to cut the lead down to 5-2.

The Regals tacked on one more to their lead on an RBI double to extend their lead to 6-2 over Pomona-Pitzer in the bottom of the fourth.

The Sagehens had a big fifth inning as they scored four runs in the inning to tie the game at 6-6 with RBI's from sophomore Natalie Ireland, sophomore Sam Carlson and sophomore Emily Rockhill.

Pomona-Pitzer went on to take the lead in the top of the sixth as Cockrell blasted a home run to left field and freshman Liz Rodarte tripled down the right field line to bring home senior Paige Oliver to give the Sagehens an 8-6 lead. The Sagehens held off the Regals in their final two at bats and won game one of the double header.

Pomona-Pitzer then turned its attention to getting the sweep on the road against Cal Lutheran.

Rodarte threw a gem of a game as she pitched a complete game shutout and only allowed five hits with eight strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season.

The Sagehens scored first in the top of the third as Carlson hit her first home run of the season and Cockrell brought home Rockhill on a sacrifice fly to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer added three more to their lead with RBI's from senior Susanne Boden and Yee to take a 5-0 lead over Cal Lutheran heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Baig gave the Sagehens one more run as she laced an RBI double to center field to bring home sophomore Missy Pekarek as the Sagehens completed the road sweep over Cal Lutheran.

"The team showed a lot of heart and fight today. They stayed composed and focused despite the rough start", said Head Coach JoAnne Ferguson. "The wins were a result of a great team effort. It took solid defense, consistent scoring throughout the day and outstanding pitching performances from Rockhill and Rodarte to secure the win."

The Sagehens next take the field as they travel to SCIAC opponent La Verne on Friday, April 15th at 2:00 p.m.
