LA VERNE, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball fell in both games of their double header by the scores of 4-3 and 9-0 to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent La Verne on Friday afternoon at Campus West Field.
The game started out as a pitching duel as both teams were shut out through four innings of play. The Sagehens struck first in the top of the fifth inning as sophomore Sam Carlson doubled to left center to bring home senior Susanne Boden to take a 1-0 lead over the Leopards.
La Verne answered in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to center field to tie the game at 1-1.
Pomona-Pitzer added two more runs to its total in the top of the seventh as sophomore Emily Rockhill doubled home sophomore Missy Pekarek and junior Sofia Baig singled home Carlson to give the Sagehens a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
La Verne found their offense with their backs against the wall and scored three runs off of an RBI single, a wild pitch and the Leopards won the game on an RBI bunt to steal game one of the double header from Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens had a hard time finding their offense in game two as they were held to only two hits in game two of the double header.
The Leopards scored first in the bottom of the second on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
La Verne then went on to score seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and held off the Sagehens' offense in the top of the fifth and took game two 7-0 in five innings.
The Sagehens next take the field as they host SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, April 16th at 12:00 p.m.
