Softball: Sagehens Finish with 12 Hits Against Bulldogs

Claremont, CA — Liz Rodarte had two RBI, and the Pomona-Pitzer Softball finished the day with 12 hits, but dropped two games to the Redlands Bulldogs on Friday afternoon.

Game One: Redlands 2, Pomona-Pitzer 0

The Sagehens made solid contact throughout the game but couldn't find any gaps in the Bulldogs' defense falling in game one. 

Liz Rodarte got the start in the circle for Pomona-Pitzer, finishing the game with six strikeouts and just one walk.

Second baseman Kristen Hong got a hit for the Sagehens, hitting a chopper up the middle in the bottom of the third. 

Designated player Haylee Sindt added a hit in the fifth, singling to shortstop and beating the throw to first. The following inning, center fielder Marya Ornelas laid down a bunt single for a hit.  

The Bulldogs got a run in the opening inning to take the lead and added another run in the fifth. Lindsey Mifsud got the win for Redlands. 

Game Two: Redlands 5, Pomona-Pitzer 2

The Sagehens held a lead through three innings but the Bulldogs retook the lead in the fourth inning and came away with the win in game two.

After the Bulldogs took the opening 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Sagehens evened the score in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Marya Ornelas started things off with a single to centerfield. Emily Rockhill then laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Ornelas in scoring position. 

First baseman Liz Rodarte then stepped up to the plate and hit a shot to right field to bring Ornelas across the plate, putting the score at 1-1. 

Later in the bottom of the third with Rockhill in scoring position after she singled and stole second, Rodarte again blasted a ball to the outfield to bring in Rockhill for the 2-1 lead. 

But Redlands rode a three hit, two run inning in the fourth inning and added another run in the sixth and seventh to take the 5-2 win.

Kristen Hong and Bianca Cockrell both finished the day with a good day at the plate, going two for three.

Rodarte and Izzy Deatherage went two for four at the plate. Emily Rockhill and Marya Ornelas each added a hit.

Alondra Reynoso got the start in the circle, striking out two in four innings of work. Rockhill and Cockrell each stepped into the circle in relief. 

Season Impact: The Sagehens drop to 7-21 overall and 3-13 in SCIAC play. The Bulldogs move to 12-16 overall and 8-8 in conference play. 

Next Game: The Sagehens take a trip to Chapman to face the Panthers in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon.
