Softball: Sagehens Win Season Series Against CMS With Doubleheader Split

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team split with Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival CMS with a 3-0 win and a 5-1 loss on Friday afternoon at Athena Field.

Season Impact: with the split, the Sagehens move to 26-12 overall and 17-9 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens have now taken three out of the four games against CMS as they won their first regular season series against the Athenas in program history.

Pomona-Pitzer 3, CMS 0

The Sagehens and Athenas each only tallied four hits in the game as we had a star-studded matchup on the mound with Liz Rodarte for the Sagehens and Anna Gurr for CMS.

Rodarte got the better of Gurr as she went all seven for her eighth shutout of the year to improve to 15-5 overall.

The Sagehens took an early lead as an error by the CMS defense allowed the first run to score for Pomona-Pitzer to allow the Sagehens to play from in front with a 1-0 lead.

Karina Falkstrom doubled the lead in the seventh after an RBI single to right field brought home Olivia Campion and Baleigh McCuskey added a little more insurance to the lead as she drove in Kendal Kipper with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Sagehens went on to shut down CMS in the seventh as they improved to 3-0 on the season against the Athenas and had an opportunity to sweep CMS for the first time in program history.

The Sagehens' bats were kept quiet in game two as Chloe Amarilla twirled a gem for the Athenas going six innings and only allowing one hit.

The Sagehens got their one run in the very first inning after a wild pitch allowed Julia Maya to score to give Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead.

CMS tied the game in the bottom of the third after an RBI double and went on to take the lead in the fourth after an RBI single gave the Athenas a 2-1 lead.

CMS added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Sagehens just didn't have an answer for the CMS pitching staff in game two as they split the road series with the Athenas.
