Softball: Sagehens Look To Follow Up Strong 2018 Season

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball Team will open the 2019 Season with a doubleheader against Puget Sound, in hopes of improving upon last season's success. After posting the best record in program history, going 26-14, the Sagehens will look go further as they enter the new year with nine returning players, including five who were in the All-SCIAC Team.

Last Season: In addition to posting a 26-14 record in the regular season, the Sagehens entered the SCIAC Tournament for the third time in program history and reached the semifinal. The Sagehens also went 3-1 against cross-street rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the regular season, the first time they won a regular season series against them.

Key Returners: Senior Liz Rodarte leads the group of returners who will look to elevate the Sagehens to the next level. Fresh off an incredible season where she won All-West Region honors and SCIAC Player of the Year, Liz Rodarte proved to be one of the top aces in the nation with a 16-8 record, 2.39 ERA, 151 strikeouts, and two no-hitters. She was also a force at the plate, crushing 11 home runs with 39 RBIs, and batting .366 last season. Junior shortstop Izzy Deatherage enters the new season with a First Team All-SCIAC honor and First Team All-Region award under her belt. The junior batted .424 last season with eight home runs and 38 RBIs. Sophomore Makensey Druckman had a promising first year, earning First Team All-SCIAC and batting .351 with a .436 OBP, all while playing incredible defense at first base. Reliable leadoff hitter Kristen Hong will look to finish her Sagehens career on a high note after scoring 33 runs and batting .352 last season, all while earning Second Team All-SCIAC. Junior Olivia Campion batted .354 with a .425 OBP last season, earning Second Team All-SCIAC. She led the team with 40 runs and clubbed four home runs. The Sagehens will also see the return of No. 2 starter Alondra Reynoso (9-7, 3.31 ERA), Michelle Calcany Blair, Karina Falkstrom, Baleigh McCuskey, and Julia Maya.

First Years: The Sagehens welcome the addition of first years Paige Blackwell, Hannah Brajkovich, Julia Carreon, Katy Hurley, Taylor Lehner, Megan Otsuka, and Kyla Walker to the program.

Schedule Watch: The Sagehens open up conference play on the road when they travel to Whittier College for a doubleheader on Saturday, February 16th at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. The Sagehens' biggest non-conference test will come on Friday, February 22nd when they host a doubleheader against No. 4 Linfield at 12:30/2:30 p.m. The first Sixth Street Rivalry series will be played at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps as they host the Sagehens on Saturday, March 2 at 12:00/2:00 p.m. The Sagehens will host another nationally ranked program on Thursday, March 21 when they host No. 12 Williams College at 12:00/2:00 p.m. The second half of the Sixth Street Rivalry will come on Friday, April 12 at 2:00/4:00 p.m. as the Sagehens host the Athenas at Wig Beach Field. The Sagehens' final regular season series will come on Saturday, April 27 against La Verne at 12:00/2:00 p.m. The SCIAC Tournament will begin on Friday, May 3.
