CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball Team split their home series against cross-street rival No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, winning the first game in a tight 4-3 contest, before taking a close 2-1 loss in the second game. The Sagehens were helped by an excellent pitching effort by Liz Rodarte who went nine total innings with four strikeouts and three earned runs.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 23-8-1 record overall and 15-5 in the SCIAC.

The Sagehens took the first game against their rivals in dramatic fashion, winning off a game-ending RBI single from Karina Falkstrom. Falkstrom finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run while Megan Otsuka went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run as well. Liz Rodarte threw a complete game for her 14th victory of the season, giving up three runs and striking out four batters.

In the top of second inning, the Sagehens turned an excellent double play. With a runner on first, Jessica Fox hit a shallow fly ball to center field. Michelle Calcany Blair sprinted to make the catch. She caught the baserunner sleeping, making a quick throw to first before she could reach the bag for the double play.

The Sagehens took the early lead in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and a runner on third, Olivia Campion laced a line drive single to left field to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. However, the Athenas struck back in the next half inning when Chloe Amarilla hit a solo home run.

Rodarte cruised to a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth, striking out Jessica Fox to retire the side. In the bottom of the fourth, the Sagehens rallied to take the lead. With two outs and runners on first and second, Kristen Hong hit a grounder towards the right side of the field. A fielding error by the second base brought in a run to make it 2-1. Megan Otsuka followed with a hard-hit grounder that deflected off the pitcher's glove to bring home another run and extend the lead 3-1.

The Sagehens showed off their terrific defense in the top of the fifth. With a runner on first, Chloe Amarilla popped out to Olivia Campion. Campion saw the runner tag back to first, but she quickly threw her out for the double play.

CMS managed to tie the game in the top of the seventh when Ananya Koneti hit a two-run home run. However, the Sagehens refused to take the game to extras. In the bottom of the final inning, the Sagehens loaded the bases with one out, setting Falkstrom up for the game-winning hit. On the 1-2 count, Falkstrom drilled a hard grounder that bounced over the third base's head to bring in the winning run.

Alondra Reynoso threw five quality innings, surrendering only two runs, but her effort was not enough to help the Sagehens secure a homestead sweep. Pomona-Pitzer battled to find their offense, but to no avail.

The two sides battled through four scoreless innings. It wasn't until the top of the fifth when the Athenas took a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the final inning, Katy Hurley launched a solo shot over the left field fence to cut the deficit within one, but that was all the damage the Sagehens would do.

Up Next: The Sagehens will host University of Redlands tomorrow, April 13 at 12:00 and 2:00 PM
