ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball Team took a dominating road sweep over Chapman University on Saturday, winning the first game 10-9 and taking the second game in six innings 15-6. Liz Rodarte swung a scoring bat at the plate, hitting 7-for-10 with four runs and two RBIs. Karina Falkstrom batted 5-for-7 total with four runs and two RBIs.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 27-8-1 record overall and 19-5 in the SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer 10, Chapman 9
Rodarte, Falkstrom, and Izzy Deatherage were the stars of the first game, combining for 10-for-14 with five RBIs and five runs. At the circle, Alondra Reynoso threw 4.2 innings of relief, surrendering only one run and striking out two for the victory.
The Sagehens wasted little time to get the lead when Deatherage hit a triple through the right side of the field to score Rodarte from first. Falkstrom followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. However, Chapman responded with a three-run homerun by Mykala Tokunaga in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead.
The Sagehens struck back in the top of the third when Falkstrom blasted a double to right center to score Deatherage from first. Olivia Campion followed with an RBI single to take back the lead. Unfortunately, the Panthers responded with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 8-4.
Pomona-Pitzer refused to back away from the slugfest. In the top of the fourth, with two outs and the bases loaded, Campion delivered a base-clearing double to cut the deficit within one.
The Panthers extended their lead 9-7 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the seventh, the Sagehens executed their comeback in dramatic fashion. With two outs and runners on second and third, Megan Otsuka hit an infield single to bring in a run. Rodarte followed with another RBI single down the left field line to tie the game and Deatherage completed the rally with a go-ahead RBI single to left field. Reynoso shut out the Panthers in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
Pomona-Pitzer 15, Chapman 6 (6 Innings)
The Sagehens took advantage of several pitching and fielding mistakes in the first inning. After Kelly McCarty issued a single and two walks to load the bases, Kristen Hong scored on a passed ball for the game's first run. Ayanna Sanchez quickly entered for relief, but her wild pitch brought in the game's second run. Hannah Brajkovich followed with an RBI single to give the Sagehens a 3-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer continued to bring the business in the top of the second inning when Taylor Lehner hit a two-out RBI double to bring in a run. Deatherage followed with a two-run homerun to extend the lead 6-0.
The Panthers responded, scoring a run in the second inning, three in the third, and one more in the fourth to cut the lead 6-5.
In the top of the fifth inning, Campion tacked on an insurance run with a sacrifice fly. Later, the Sagehens will rally with eight more runs in the top of the sixth to put the game far out of reach with a 15-5 lead. Chapman would add a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was all they could muster for the rest of the game.
