CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball Team split their final regular season home series of the season with Cal Lutheran University on Friday evening, winning the first game in five innings by mercy rule 11-1 before falling 7-6 in the second match. Katy Hurley batted 4-for-6 with a run and two RBIs while Izzy Deatherage went 3-for-7 with a home run, 6 RBIs, and four runs. Liz Rodarte threw 8.2 innings total, giving up one run and striking out nine batters.
Prior to the games, Head Coach Joanne Ferguson and the rest of the team honored seniors Baleigh McCuskey, Kristen Hong, and Liz Rodarte for their contributions and commitment to the Sagehen Softball program.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 28-9-1 record overall and 20-6 in the SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer 11, Cal Lutheran 1 (5 Innings)
Liz Rodarte threw a gem against the Regals, surrendering only one run and two hits while striking out eight in five innings of work. Her performance earned her 15th win of the season. Izzy Deatherage delivered majority of the damage, hitting 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs, including a home run. Karina Falkstrom was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run.
The Regals struck early with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning, but the Sagehens did not allow the lead to last. In the bottom of the same inning, with runners on second and third, Izza Deatherage doubled down the left field line to tie the game. Falkstrom and Hurley followed with back-to-back singles to extend the lead 3-1.
Rodarte did not relent in the circle, retiring the next 12 out of 13 batters to prevent the Regals from mustering a comeback.
In the bottom of the second inning, Deatherage crushed a laser over the left field fence with a two-out three-run home run to extend the lead 6-1.
The Sagehens put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, rallying for five runs to extend the advantage 11-1. The Regals could not hit in the fifth inning as Rodarte pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to slam the door.
Pomona-Pitzer 6, Cal Lutheran 5
The Sagehens dropped the second game of the doubleheader as the Regals chipped away for the comeback victory.
After the Regals took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Sagehens responded with a two-out rally in the same inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Falkstrom laced a two-run single to left and Hurley followed with a double to take a 3-1 lead.
The Sagehens extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-run single by Deatherage to make it 5-1.
The Regals tacked on one run in the third and followed up with a big five-run rally in the fourth inning to lead 7-5.
Olivia Campion cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, but that was all the Sagehens could muster as the Regals held on for the victory.
