Sagehens Drop Season Opener To San Diego Christian

Claremont, Calif. - Junior transfer Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 13 points in her Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball debut but it was not enough as the Sagehens fell 77-49 to San Diego Christian in their season opener on Tuesday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Freshman center Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) also performed well in her first collegiate game, as she had 12 points on 4-6 shooting from the floor and 3-3 shooting at the foul line for the Sagehens, while returning sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif.) had 12 points on 4-7 shooting from three-point territory.

However, San Diego Christian received 23 points on 9-13 shooting from Brittany Robinson and a strong all-around game with 15 points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals from Brittany Daniel to get the win.

The Hawks forced the tempo with their pressure defense, as they tallied 22 steals on the day. Jasmin Thomas chipped in with 12 points on 5-8 shooting, while Jermani Stewart had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. San Diego Christian forced Pomona-Pitzer into 19 first half turnovers, as they took a 35-18 lead at the break. After falling behind 11-2 early, the Sagehens had the game within 19-12, but another 11-2 run pushed the Hawks lead to 30-14, and Pomona-Pitzer was unable to threaten again.

Sones, who transferred from Bowdoin College in Maine this past summer, showed a versatile all-around offensive game, with several twisting lay-ups in traffic and a three-pointer. Freshman Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.) led the Sagehens in rebounding with seven, while freshman point guard Caroline Zaia (Napa, Calif.) had a team-high three assists.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it hosts a home game with Pacific (Ore.) this Friday night at 7 p.m.
