Claremont, Calif. – Junior guard Vanessa Ho (San Francisco, Calif. - pictured) scored a season-high 14 points off the bench, but it was not enough as the La Sierra Women's Basketball team broke open a close game in the second half and captured a 58-41 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday evening.
The loss drops the Sagehens to 0-6 on the season, while La Sierra, which was led by 20 points from Joirdan Jones, improves to 2-11 overall with the win.
Ho, whose 14 points were two shy of her career high set last season, helped send Pomona-Pitzer into the locker room with some momentum, as she drove from coast to coast and beat the buzzer with a running scoop shot to get the Sagehens within 31-27 at intermission.
Jones, though, took over in the early part of the second half, as she knocked down two three-pointers in a 10-2 run to get the lead up to 41-29, then had a steal and breakaway lay-up to stretch the margin to 45-32 with 15:07 left to play.
A three-pointer from sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif.) brought the Sagehens within 47-35 with 14:12 left, but then neither team would score for almost six minutes, as Pomona-Pitzer was unable to cut into the gap. Two Ho foul shots with 7:21 left ended the Sagehen scoring drought and made the score 53-37, but La Sierra scored the game's next nine points to pull away and cap off a 15-2 run over almost a 10-minute span.
Sophomore guard Erin Edmonds (Salem, Ore.) was 3-3 from the floor and had 11 points for the Sagehens, while Hashizume finished with 13 and junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 10. Freshman forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) added a team-high 10 rebounds. Ashley Baumgaetel tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds for La Sierra to support the game-high 20 from Jones.
The two teams will play again next week at La Sierra on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m.
